What Boards Need to Get Right in 2026
Dr. Donna Hamlin, CEO
Boards navigate complex, high-impact challenges that are shaping modern governance. It calls all to get ahead of governance issues coming our way.
Strategic Long View
Boards today are so consumed by expanding duties that they do not make time for futuristic long-term strategic thinking. When boards are consumed by compliance, cyber security, AI and operations, the board sacrifices it’s most important duty: seeing over the horizon. It’s not wise to excuse your board from futurism. Boards need to do it.
A Unified Approach to AI Governance
The common approach is failing, as the board, management and AI designer team are all evaluating AI separately. None are coordinating. They are not talking together and each are looking at AI differently. AI governance requires the three groups to work together to create a framework that covers the full design. We recommend all boards create the “Three Musketeers” model for planning and oversight.
Understand AI Must Not Replace Human Intelligence
Artificial intelligence is a tool for ideation and suggestions of what to consider or study. Ultimately, AI can offer ideas but board directors and executives make the decisions.
It’s vital to work on careful frameworks for all AI so you make wise decisions.

Data Governance Needs Strong Attention
Data sovereignty is a serious issue globally. Countries are now trying to build their own AI systems because they do not trust others with their data. Data governance is a prerequisite that boards must have in place before any AI toll is adopted or deployed.
Board Composition for Current and Succession Planning
It helps to start with a strength map for the current talent to clarify the mix of skills and expertise, then outlining what gaps may exist that need attention for the future. Then get the support for an independent evaluation of board performance, composition planning, professional development and ways to educate on changes and skills needed to address new challenges.
